So I downsized my map a little and used a breadboard that I could solder permanent connections too. Here are some pics.

Solderable breadboard from Adafruit

made a mounting bracket for the ambient light sensor

Clamps to hold the board in place.

LED grommets I made that look great!

The RPI and 40 pin ribbon cable to breadboard.

Almost finished map. I just need to make the case for the OLED displays and mount it.

Here is the completed map. I reworked the layout, added the 8 OLED displays and made some sleeves and button caps for the 3 buttons. The wood didn't drill cleanly so I may remake the sleeves and leave a lip around it to hide the mess.

My biggest issue was in not soldering cleanly and providing power and ground to both sides of the breadboard and then NOT providing power to the strip. Also I failed to provide power to the multiplexer chip. Once I did the the displays came to life!

That's cool. Great job.

What was your impression using the solderable breadboards. I've not tried it yet, though I have one waiting for the next build.

I like the way you separated the OLED's into 2 groups of 4. Seems to work well. I added the picture of the completed board to the site's Gallery. Hope you don't mind.

BTW: I added a routine that will reboot the board each night. It can be turned on and off as desired. It will be part of the next update. Thanks for all your help with finding bugs on this project. - Mark

In general I like the solderable board. It took some youtube videos to see the right way to use it, that is to fill the hole with solder and then remelt it when you are ready to add the wire. Melt, stab in the wire, hold until it cools. Easy.

Also plan all the wires you will solder and have space for the iron. I got into some tight spots and melted a few wires. I was getting frustrated as the OLED's were not working. Examining the wiring I first noticed I missed adding jumpers to the other side of the multiplexer chip. Still it didn't work. Then I noticed I didn't even run power and ground to the chip. So it was a learning curve to translate your schematics to the layout on the board.

Third time is the charm as they say.

Regarding the 4 place OLED, my preference would be to not have them scrolling. I would like to see 4 exclusive airports on the left (0-3) and the highest winds being variable with highest to less winds on the right 4 (4-7) displays.

I will try the different settings you sent a while back now that I have mine working, but if that doesn't do it 2 separate preferences for the OLED would be great.
